The beginnings of the 08 Garden

We have decided to do raised beds this year. We used 2″ x 12″ x 8′ pressure treated wood lined with black plastic. According to the government it is perfectly safe to use pressure treated wood against garden soil, but some other less official organizations disagree so I have opted to use the plastic just in case. We framed the top part of the beds and stained the exterior so that it would look nice, but this isn’t really necessary. We then filled each box with 1/3 compost and 2/3 potting mix (all natural, nothing added). If you are in Charleston the Bees Ferry Landfill will sell you compost for $ 10 a ton. For good soil to put over that I went to the Mulch Market on River Road, Johns Island (just off Maybank hwy).
